In 2010 distant street light management and control system SmartELI was implemented in Tartu. It is a modular street lighting control system that makes street luminaires more energy efficient and cuts maintenance cost. The smart street lighting system is designed to be future-proof. It uses open IP-based wireless communication enabling standalone street lighting infrastructures to become hubs for Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud-based services.

125 electrical fuse boxes are currently monitored and controlled from distance. The monitoring and controlling system gives information to the city government about current power supply and any abnormal changes that require some action. Municipalities have the option to gradually invest in modern technology. The modular SmartELI street light- and line-based systems work seamlessly together.
